The Earth as mother and as lover. Dorothée Jansen and Sasperella La Sirène dedicate themselves to our intimate relationship with our home planet in an ecosexual Butoh performance with an opulent live soundtrack. At the center is honey — as a natural product, food, and gift from the bees.

Ecosexuality changes the perspective on our relationship with the Earth: it understands the Earth not only as a mother, but also as a lover. The term was coined by »ecosexuality« from Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens as an Andreas Weber is a related concept to be found in the idea of erotic ecology. The focus is on the question of how relationships between humans and their natural environment can be shaped as romantic.

The relationship between flower and bee is a vivid example of this. The bee receives nectar and pollen and in return contributes to the pollination of the plants — a significant portion of our nutrition depends on this service. Honey is created from the material of this relationship: from flower nectar, which the bees collect, transform, and store in the hive.

Yet honey is not a self-evident gift. For millennia, humans have taken it from the hives and utilized it as food, medicine, and a luxury item. Beekeeping is therefore also a form of appropriation — even where it is practiced with great care. The performance by Dorothee Janssen and Sasperella La Sirène navigates between care, exploitation, and mutual dependence.

Dorothée Jansen works as a Butoh performer at the intersections of body, ecology, and ritual. Sasperella The Mermaid (Saskia Baumgart) combines voice and sound and can be experienced regularly at the Lovelab, most recently at Seeds and in Venuswald. She accompanies the performance live — not as musical background, but as an independent voice in dialogue with the body.
