»The Last Generation | Tim Ra

Although photorealistic in execution, »The Last Generation« evokes those fantastical and allegorical elements reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch's surreal depictions of humanity's moral and existential struggles. Bosch's work, with its multifaceted, chaotic scenes of human folly and divine retribution, offers a fitting parallel to the crises of the present day.

The increasing frequency of floods and other climate disasters, as devastating as it is, touches much deeper layers. The flood is an archetypal symbol of humanity's oldest narratives, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the biblical deluge—parables that warn against hubris and decadence and speak of humanity's fragile relationship with nature.

Remarkably, the flood metaphor is employed across the political spectrum. On the left, the scientific reality of climate change is central, augmented by metaphorical floods such as the rise of right-wing populism and its rhetoric. On the right, the term describes migratory movements framed as a threat to cultural and economic stability, or the growing influence of progressive ideas that seem to inundate traditional values. Both uses convey the same sense of existential inundation—being overwhelmed by forces beyond one's control, whether natural or societal.

Apocalyptic thinking can be found across the political spectrum. The environmental movement's warnings of ecological collapse, however grounded in scientific evidence, mirror right-wing narratives of social and economic breakdown. Each side sees the other as a harbinger of chaos and disorder – a self-reinforcing cycle of fear and blame that intensified once again during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In my personal experience, groups that identify as rationalists and those dismissed as »crazy« are astonishingly similar: both inhabit the same emotional landscape of fear and anger, driven by the perception of a world on the brink. This realization led me to a biographical decision—to turn away from these polarizing emotions and instead cultivate a field of energy from hope, joy, and humor: a conscious rejection of the binary logic of apocalyptic thinking.
